The Central New England Railway
The Central New England Railway was one of two rail lines that stopped in Winsted from 1871 until the 1980's. The C.N.E. (founded as the Connecticut Western Railway) operated a passenger train line from Hartford to Canaan and on to New York State. The above photograph of a C.N.E. train was taken at the site of this trail, and includes views down to Main Street.

Map of Winstead - 1874
When this map was drawn, Winsted and West Winsted were two separate villages of the Town of Winchester. As can be seen on the map, both villages had railroad stations. The Village of Winsted was served by both train lines that ran through Winsted while the West Winsted Station was served by one of the lines - the Central New England. Note also the freight house and the engine turntable.
