Downtown Miami in Miami-Dade County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Dade County War Memorial
The Dade County War Memorial was first dedicated July 5, 1943. Funds for its construction were raised in a door-to-door drive by the Harvey Seeds Post of the American Legion. The inscription originally contained the names of 87 Dade Countians who had already died in World War II. On November 11, 1944 another 110 names were added.
Time and vandalism took their toll. Several of the blue glass panels were broken and the monument fell into disrepair. In 1990 restoration of the monument was completed by the City of Miami. Using a 1946 War Department list, the names of all Dade Countians who lost their lives in World War II were inscribed in granite.
The monument was rededicated on November 11, 1990.
Several yards south of this monument is the site where an assassination attempt was made on the life of President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, February 15, 1933. As FDR was about to deliver a speech, an anarchist fired shots, missing his target but striking Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak, who had accompanied FDR here. Cermak died of his wounds March 6, 1933.
