Newhall in Santa Clarita in Los Angeles County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
La Loma de los Vientos
William S Hart Park and Museum
| | The Hill of the Winds | |
This hilltop retreat was originally the home of silent film legend William S. Hart (1864-1946). In 1920, Hart stated to a reporter, "Always, always, my big desire has been to come back - to build the home I have dreamed about - here in the West...It is, of course, to be a ranch out in the big open, far removed from railroads and civilization." Soon after that interview, he purchased his ranch in Newhall, California.
In July of 1926, Hart wrote to Los Angeles architect Arthur R. Kelly, "am contemplating building a Spanish style home on my Ranch at Newhall. Would you care to take a trip up there with me to look the location over and see if you would care to submit plans?"
Kelly accepted the commission, and construction began in 1927. The result was a true movie-star estate complete with a Pool, a Gate Tower and a Garage with a Chauffeur's Quarters. Hart named his estate La Loma de los Vientos (The Hill of the Winds). Midway down the hill, Hart added a Bunkhouse where he entertained friends and hosted late-night card games.
Hart filled his mansion with his collection of Western art and artifacts, movie memorabilia, books and more. In his will, he left his home and ranch to the people of Los Angeles County. It was his way of thanking the people who had given their "nickels and dimes" to see his movies, even during the tough times of World War I. Today, the William S. Hart Park and Museum is operated by the City of Santa Clarita. We hope you enjoy the property as Hart had wished.
