1. Gallaudet Building Marker
In 1919, during the administration of Frank R. Wheeler, the board of directors voted to sell the school's one-hundred-year-old campus at 690 Asylum Avenue in Hartford to the Hartford Fire Insurance Company and relocate the school to a new site in West Hartford. The board commissioned Isaac A. Allen, Jr., architect, and William A. Boring, a New York City consulting architect, to design the main building. The Porteus-Walker Company was the general contractor. The cornerstone was laid by Henry A. Perkins, president of the board of directors on July 22, 1920, and the building was dedicated March 22, 1923. President Percival Hall of Gallaudet College was the dedication speaker. Classes began in February 1923, at the new campus in the main building, which was named in honor of the school's founder, the Reverend Dr. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
