Carl H. von Canstein was born in Gut Lindenberg near Beeskow 1667. Inspired by Col 3:16 he decided to establish a Bible Society in Halle in 1710 - the very first of its kind. According to von Canstein, the Bible Society should print affordable Bibles in order to spread the word of God to everyone. Around 1800 nearly two million complete Bibles were printed and sold. Von Canstein lived in the Nikolai-Quarter
