1. Early Military Career Marker
After graduation from the Civilian Pilot Training Program, James stayed on as an instructor for the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. In July 1943, he was commissioned into the Army Air Corps himself, starting his military career.
During WWII, Chappie remained stateside to train new cadets. By 1949, however, the military began its integration of service personnel, opening up more opportunities for people of color. James went on several deployments, proving his capabilities as both a pilot and leader.
The first time James saw combat was during the Korean War. In one tour, he flew over 100 combat missions in the F-51 Mustang as part of Fighter Bomber Squadrons. After the war, James assumed command of the 437th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, and later the 60th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron before moving into the Air Force Headquarters.
