Inscription.

of the East German government, and the 3rd World Festival of Youth: All of these themes are united in an ambtious relief by the sculptor Gerhard Thieme ( panels 12, 17). It is a sequel to a similar relief adorning City Hall, but from a different political perspective. The building on the opposite corner has been christened 'the Magistrate's Bosoms' by the invariably quick-witted Berliners due to its prominent bulges and close proximity to City Hall.

The name of the restaurant, 'Mutter Hoppe', is a tribute to Ida Hoppe's pub in the mainly socialist district of Wedding. It was very popular in the 1920s and 30s, and its name invokes the working-class tradition prior to the war and Berlin's division, a tradition which has been the subject of many artistic works (→ panel 3).

Poststrasse:
This street has long been an epicentre of new developments in the city. Berlin's first theatre was opened on the street, in 1701, as was its first pharmacy, which did business from 1488 to 1739. The street can also lay claim to the city's first post office, which was opened in 1685 at 1 Poststrasse.

Its predecessor, the 'Botenanstalt'

(Messenger Service) was in fact dedicated to postal needs prior to this date, but only for the court. Over time, the post office grew to an impressive complex of buildings to manage the city's growing dependence on postal communications. Wartenberg Palais, an official residence for the postmaster, was undoubtedly the most impressive expansion project undertaken (→ panel 17).
