Tradition in Berlin-Cölln:
Formerly situated directly at a city gate of Cölln - the other half of the twin city of Berlin-Cölln the house was a likely first stop for the thirsty after a long journey or day on guard duty. The old inn, Zum Nussbaum ('Walnut Tree Inn'), contained structural elements dating back to at least 1596. Its current name is relatively

recent, however. Roughly 200 years ago, pub-goers gifted the walnut tree after which the inn was named to a young female innkeeper. In 1943, the house and tree both fell victim to the Second World War. The inn was rebuilt true to the original in Nikolai Quarter in a setting similar to its previous location in old Cölln. A new tree, an American Black Walnut, was also planted. Work was completed in 1987.

Three original figures from Berlin's history:
Heinrich Zille, Otto Nagel and Claire Waldoff, 'The Voice of Berlin'. All three were regular patrons of Zum Nussbaum and were friends with one another. The singer Claire Waldoff, who was not a native of Berlin, enjoyed spending her time learning the local dialect in the inn. She transformed the folksy Berlin manner into stage act and thus became the most popular 'Berliner' of her time - until the Nazis forbade her appearance in radio or film in 1936. Heinrich Zille is still remembered for his warm-hearted and sarcastic portrayals of urban life and hardship in Berlin. A special museum (→ M1) is dedicated to his memory. The painter Otto Nagel is above all famous for his
