This beautiful home style was very popular when built in 1905 for one of the City's wealthiest industrialists. Issac [sic] N. Bushong was born in Ohio in 1855. He came from a very humble beginning to developing holdings in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, California and Mexico.
Bushong came to Gladstone in 1893 and established a Hoop and Stave Mill. By 1898 he had built The Northwestern Cooperage and Lumber Mill and employed approximately 1000 people in the mill and in the woods. He believed in a "no waste" concept and used every kind of wood in many forms. Veneer, hardwood flooring, cedar posts, railroad ties, poles, shingles, lath and more. He added a dry kiln in 1926 and a veneer kiln in 1930. The company was under contract during WWI to supply wood for airplane stock.
I.N. Bushong married Mary Alice Scott in 1882 and they had five children. Their only son, J. Paul Bushong, was well established with the company. After Mary Alice died, Bushong married Grace Watts in 1904, she resided in this home for the remainder of her life. She was a strong supporter of women's rights.
Mr. Bushong was very civic minded and helped to develop the Commission-Manager form of Government in 1923 and served as mayor during that timeframe. He was very active with his church, served as a Rotarian, Director of the Gladstone State Savings Bank, and Director of the Michigan Association of Manufacturers.
Frank Green was his chauffeur and Miss Alice Hagland and Carrie Lundquist served as house staff. I. N. Bushong died in 1932 and the company was liquidated in 1937-38.
This home stands very stately having served many families and, continues to grace the neighborhood.
