1. Walloon Depot Marker
In 1873 the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railway completed its line of tracks that ran between Grand Rapids and Petoskey. This first served those working in the logging industry harvesting the pine forest which covered the area.
Around 1880, a depot was established in Clarion, a small logging village located at a point eight miles south of Petoskey and a little over a mile east of what was then called Talcott, a small village on the east shore of beautiful Bear Lake - now known as Walloon Lake. A short final ride on a rail spur delivered visitors to a depot in the village. The depot operated until 1928 when the rising popularity of automobiles ended rail service to the village.
