Lee Corso
Headgear Pick Tradition
Few things are more synonymous with a college football Saturday than Lee Corso, College GameDay and headgear picks.
Corso, an analyst and commentator and the last remaining original cast member from the show that began in 1987, made his first-ever headgear pick at Ohio State on Oct. 5, 1996- donning the Brutus head before a 38-7 win over fourth-ranked Penn State. And he finished his unprecedented run on the popular pre-game show right where it began: on Aug. 30, 2025, he made his final headgear pick prior to the Ohio State-Texas season-opening game.
In between his picks in 1996 and 2025, Corso made over 400 headgear selections. He put on the Brutus head more than any other; Ohio State and College GameDay became linked with big games, big wins and memorable moments. As of 2025, Ohio State holds the record for most games at a GameDay location, most times hosting College GameDay and most College GameDay wins.
Corso, who turned 90 years old just three weeks before his final College GameDay appearance, played football and baseball at Florida State University. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1957 and a master's degree in 1958. He was a collegiate coach for 15 years - at Louisville, Indiana and Northern Illinois - and spent one season coaching in the USFL before joining ESPN in 1987. Lee Corso and College Gameday Notes:
Corso has selected and worn Brutus Buckeye headgear a record 45 times (Alabama is next with 38);
