1. Nixon Wingfield Building Marker

Inscription. This structure was built in 1907. It was the headquarters of Senator George Nixon's and George Wingfield's Goldfield Consolidated Mines Company. Nixon and Wingfield had merged a number of mine holdings into the new company in 1906 and eventually controlled nearly all the mines in the Goldfield area. When they took the company public it became the 17th largest in the United States. Wingfield moved from his home to the third floor of this building where he had an apartment and lived until late 1908. In 1909 Nixon and Wingfield dissolved their company, with Nixon taking the banking interests, and Wingfield holding on to the mines. During the labor troubles of 1907, planning among the mine owners for how to handle the possible strikes occurred in this building. By late 1908, Wingfield moved to Reno, but he retained this building and visited often to keep track of his holdings.
