Inscription.
• In 1953, the Ohio legislature designated the Ohio Buckeye, Aesculus glabra, as the state tree.

• The tree is called the "buckeye" because its nuts resemble the shape and color of a deer's eye.

• The holding of a "buckeye nut" in one's pocket is considered good luck.

• A Buckeye Tree may grow to 60 feet tall by 30 feet wide.

• Trees create an ecosystem to provide habitat and food for birds and other animals.

• Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.

Litter
• Litter is misplaced, abandoned or discarded waste.

• Litter attracts more litter. People are more likely to litter where litter has accumulated.

• The most commonly found types of litter are fast food wrappers, soft drink and water cans and bottles, plastic bags, tires, straws, gum, cigarette butts, tissues, papers and others.

• Litter spoils the attractiveness of roadways, as well as urban and rural landscapes, while creating serious health and safety issues that potentially impact humans and wildlife, as well as the general environment.

• Humans, animals and plants all need unpolluted water to

survive.

• Litter impacts the quality of life, destroys a community's natural beauty, harms and or kills wildlife and diminishes water quality.

• Of all trash, plastic trash has the greatest potential to harm the environment, wildlife and humans. It can be found floating at the surface, suspended in the water column, or on the bottom of almost all water bodies. It is transported by rivers to the ocean, where it moves with the currents, and is often eaten by birds and fish, concentrating toxic chemicals in their tissues, and filling their stomachs, causing them to starve. Plastic debris is much more than a mere aesthetic problem.

You Can Help!
• Litter is preventable. Set a good example for your friends, kids, family and neighbors by not littering (your actions matter).

• If you see litter, please pick it up and dispose of it properly.

• Never throw trash or a cigarette butt out of a vehicle window or on the ground. Keep a reusable litter bag in your vehicle and use it.

• Never throw anything into a body of water.
