1. Beginnings And Endings Marker

Inscription. The birth of Groveport occurred near this spot. Our ancestors who built the town lay in peace nearby.

The first grave in the cemetery is that of Catherine G. Richardson, who was buried there in 1809. Her grave is recognizable by its distinctive coffin-shaped gravestone.

Internationally famous horse trainer and Groveport native John S. Rarey, 1827-1866, is buried in the Groveport Cemetery. He is known for his humane Rarey Method of training horses, on which he built a strong reputation. He gained widespread fame when he tamed the fierce stallion Cruiser.

Groveport was originally two towns - Wert's Grove and Rarey's Port - that sat side by side for many years in the early 19th century, divided only by College Street. The citizens of the two towns grew tired of the confusion regarding the Post Office and canal timetables caused by having the two towns. A public meeting was held at a cooper shop on Walnut Street along the Ohio Canal, where the two towns were merged into "Groveport" in 1847.
