Inscription.
On 7 October 1994 the City of Danville was awarded the 1994 Virginia Preservation Award for rehabilitating and preserving Union Street Bridge by the Preservation Alliance of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. The City issued two commemorative post cards celebrating the redesign and opening of the bridge in 1994. Local historian Gary Grant has observed, “Bridges are the city’s lifelines, connecting north and south and reminding motorists and pedestrians daily where Danville really began – at the river. The Union Street Bridge is a beautiful example of how old industrial structures need not be cast aside, but refurbished for each generation.”

3. Bridge Preservation

The Union Street Bridge restoration project won the 1994 award for, among other decisions, preserving the original bridge piers, seen here in a portrait on display in the Danville Mall.

Although they are now encased in concrete, the original stone piers continue to support the Union Street Bridge.
