1. 110 West Elder Marker
Inscription. Built in 1860, 110 W. Elder was initially home to immigrant-run coffee houses and saloons followed by a series of boot and shoe stores. At the turn of the 20th century, the storefront transitioned to a dry goods grocery. Then, from 1902 to 1922, Russian Jewish immigrant, Samuel Glass, ran a men's furnishing shop, followed by his son-in-law, Ben Simon. In 1940, Adolph Saphir moved his dry goods store from 115 W. Elder to 110 W. Elder, and he stayed there until his retirement in 1964. The storefront sat vacant from 1985 until Madison's Grocery opened in 2001.
