Inscription.

main parish church and was taken out of religious service in 1958. Rebuilt after severe wartime destruction, it has served as a museum since Berlin’s 750th anniversary celebration in 1987. At the same time, St. Nicholas Church is also a place where Berlin’s democratic history took place. In recognition of the dignity and significance of St. Nicholas Church as a site of lived democracy, the Berlin House of Representatives donated this commemorative plaque.

1809
As a result of the Stein-Hardenberg reforms, Berlin’s first elected city council assembly was consecrated and sworn in at St. Nicholas Church.

1991
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the first freely elected parliament of reunified Berlin met in St. Nicholas Church for its constituent session.

St. Nicholas Church is the burial place of many notable Berliners.

Samuel von Pufendorf
who was called to Berlin in 1688 by Elector Friedrich Wilhelm as court historiographer and court councillor, is also buried in St. Nicholas Church. Von Pufendorf developed a theory of natural law committed to tolerance, whose early formulation of the fundamental values of human dignity and human equality influenced the intellectual founders of the American independence movement and the French Revolution, and ultimately also entered into the catalogue of basic values of the German Basic Law.
