Meigs' Raid

From Sachem's Head Harbor on May 23, 1777, 170 men under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs rowed across Long Island Sound to raid and destroy a British supply depot at Sag Harbor, New York. During this engagement with the enemy, not one of his men was killed or wounded and 90 prisoners were taken.
Congress voted to recognize Lieutenant-Colonel Meigs for the prudence, activity, enterprise and valor in which the twenty five hour expedition was conducted. Lieutenant-Colonel Meigs was awarded a prestigious presentation sword for his heroism.

The plaque to commemorate Guilfords involvement in the Revolutionary War raid to destroy a British supply depot at Sag Harbor, N.Y. was dedicated and unveiled on Aug. 18. Under the command of Lt. Col. Return Jonathan Meigs, the military action commenced from Sachems Head on May 23, 1777. Those at the ceremony included members from the 6th Connecticut Regiment, 5th Connecticut Regiment, 9th Regiment of Foot, Lebanon Militia, Pawlings Levies, Hearts of Oak Independent Militia in addition to members from the SAR, DAR and CAR, First Selectman Matthew Hoey and many from the public.(Submitted on May 9, 2026.)
