Ybor City in Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Belmont Heights
During the 1920s, over the objections of nearby white homeowners, the city's leadership allowed the creation of a Black subdivision between 34th Street and Osborne Avenue. This was next to the original Belmont Heights subdivision. which was planned and marketed, beginning in 1907, as a white suburb for the City of Tampa. This area was "out in the country" during those days, and a residential community and business district began to take shape. Due to the incredible expansion in the city during the 1920s Florida Land Boom, housing within Tampa's older Black neighborhoods became quite scarce. This growth prompted both home seekers and developers to look to adjacent areas, with Belmont Heights in the growing East Tampa section being one of those. Belmont Heights grew rapidly, and it has become one of the most important historic African American neighborhoods in the city. Its namesake Little League has produced a vast number of Major League baseball players. In addition, the neighborhood is the home of Middleton High School and the historic Memorial Park Cemetery.
