Born in Grand Island, Nebraska, Terry Wetzel developed his passion for baseball playing Little League and American Legion Baseball. He received his bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Concordia University–Nebraska and a master of education degree in educational psychology from Valparaiso University. Wetzel began his professional career as a teacher and coach in Ohio, Indiana and Texas.

In 1983, Wetzel joined Major League Baseball with the Kansas City Royals where he was a member of the 1985 world champions Kansas City Royals scouting staff. In 1997, he was promoted to senior director of scouting. During his tenure, Wetzel was with the Kansas City Royals organization for 17 years.

Wetzel joined the Colorado Rockies organization in 2000 as a special assignment scout. He was a member of the 2007 National League champions Colorado Rockies scouting staff. Wetzel was with the Rockies organization for 14 seasons.

Wetzel joined the Washington Nationals in 2015 as a special assistant to the general manager and president of baseball operations. Currently he is involved in all areas of baseball operations, scouting at the Major League, Minor League, International & Amateur Free Agent levels.

2011: Inducted in to the Texas Baseball Scouts Associations Hall of Fame,
2014: Inducted in to the Midwest Scouts Associations Hall of Fame.

Wetzel resides in Overland Park, Kansas, with his wife, Patti. They have two children, Jenna and Ryan (selected by the Washington Nationals in the 33rd round of the 2016 MLB draft).
