Transvaalplein: 2. Ontwerp van Berlage
⎯⎯⎯
Design by Berlage
Inscription.
Design by Berlage
In 1911, the Transvaalbuurt district still lay largely undeveloped. Transvaalplein was the first major housing project. The renowned architect Berlage was commissioned to design it. A few years earlier, he had designed the ANDB union building.
According to Berlage, housing entailed more than simply providing dwellings; it also meant giving shape to a community. Berlage designed Transvaalplein to resemble a village. The variation in building heights is a striking feature; the corners facing Smitstraat are taller than the facades facing the square. The balconies and bay windows serve to distinguish the individual homes.
