Ginkgo
(Ginkgo biloba)
| | Hiroshima | |
This tree, presented to Manzanar National Historic Site by Green Legacy Hiroshima on World Peace Day, September 21, 2025, is a descendant of a ginkgo tree located at Shukkeien Garden.
About 1,500 yards from the hypocenter, the mother tree is over 200 years old and one of only three trees at the garden to survive the atomic-bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Shukkeien, created in 1620, suffered extensive damage from the bombing but became a refuge for victims of the war. After renovations, the garden reopened in 1951.
Green Legacy Hiroshima has been established to safeguard and spread the seeds and saplings of Hiroshima's atomic-bomb survivor trees - and their message of peace and hopes for a nuclear-free world.
Erected 2025 by National Park Service.
