1. The Watch Factory District Marker

Inscription. This Elgin historic district was established in 1997 connecting the neighborhood with the history of the Elgin National Watch Company. Over 100 years, the plant made 50,000,000 watches! Many watch workers lived in buildings near the factory. For the past 30 years' thousands of grant dollars have been given to homeowners to improve their homes and maintain landmark properties. There are many architectural gems in this neighborhood related to the watch factory.

1883 — The Watch Factory Depot on National Street is where you are standing. Workers got off the train at this depot to go to work in the factory.

1903 — Fire Barn No. 5 Museum on St. Charles Street was built to serve and protect the Watch Factory neighborhood.

1910 — The observatory on Watch Street is now owned by the U-46 School District for student programming. It was built by the watch company to tell time by the stars.

To walk these streets today is to feel the echo of generations who built their lives here.

3. Watch Factory Depot

The site of the watch factory is on the right, where the clock is located. The factory was torn down in the 1960s and its location today is a strip mall, where there is a historical marker.
