Inscription. The Elgin Historic District is one of the city's oldest residential areas and includes the site of the founder's log cabin. Lots in the district were first platted in 1842. Here once lived leaders of the watch and dairy industries. Large homes with spacious grounds, brick apartments with overhanging cornices, and small frame cottages are interspersed along tree-lined streets. The district contains a variety of architecture including now rare cobblestone structures.
