Burton Township, Geauga County, ODNR/DMRM Permit #2013 Producer: David R. Hill, Inc. In 1860, the Macksburg/Dexter well, in south eastern Ohio, Noble County, became the first commercial oil well drilled in Ohio, and followed the Drake well by only a few months. Natural gas was discovered in 1884.
Geauga County's first well was drilled in 1899, in Hambden Township, to a depth of 2,500 feet.
As of 2010, 2,153 wells have been drilled in Geauga County.
And more than 273,000 wells have been drilled in 76 of Ohio's 88 counties.
