Party Propaganda
Inscription.
Party Propaganda
The artist Eli Smalhout lived at number 12b (now 19). Together with his colleague Meijer Bleekrode, he created virtually all the posters and election placards for the SDAP (Social Democratic Workers' Party, the predecessor of the PvdA, the Dutch Labour Party). Particularly around election time, there was intense rivalry in the Transvaalbuurt district with the Communist Party. To attract votes, Eli Smalhout placed large election placards on the roof of his house. With the growing threat of the Second World War, Smalhout also created protest signs warning against the intolerance of National Socialism.
