Israel "Doc" Beal
Born April 10, 1848
Died May 11, 1929

Israel Beal was born into slavery, freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, joined the Union Army as a Teamster. He came to California in the 1854 as a pioneer, became a sharecropper, businessman and builder responsible for the construction of early churches in Redlands and Big Bear Dam. He and his wife, Martha Embers Beal, married in 1870 and had seven children - four of whom survived childhood.
