The year prior to his arrival in Winston-Salem, Eddy "The Jet" Alvarez was representing the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi where he came away with a silver medal in the 5000m Short Track Speed Skating Relay event. Alvarez would go on to become the third American ever to medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympics; capturing silver on the US Baseball Team at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
