Some parents envisioned high education in Lancaster. They formed a stock committee in the 1890's to obtain such a facility. Randolph Clark, unhappy with the major changes at Add-Ran University, accepted an invitation to head a school built for him. The stock company raised $20,000 to purchase 9 acres west of the intersection or present N. Dallas and 7th St. A large class building with top equipment, was flanked by two dormitories. Buildings were steam heated and had acetylene lights. Opening in the fall of 1898 with nonsectarian classes closed in the school year 1900-1901 as a financial failure.

Professor T.H. Bridges operated Henry College in 1901-1902. The vacant structures reopened in 1903 to 1906 under Professor George Wharton, A.Μ., D.D., as the Lancaster Military Academy, "a first class preparatory school". Abandoned until 1910, when Professor A.C. Speers of Ferris apparently purchased the facility and operated Speer's School until it burned on February 13, 1912
