Welcome to Saint Mary's Cathedral, Limerick
Inscription.
Welcome
St Mary’s Cathedral has stood at the heart of Limerick for nine centuries. It is on the site of a one-time Viking Parliament and a later Royal Palace of the Kings of Munster.
It was founded in 1168 by King Dónal Mór O’Brien (d.c.1194), King of Thomond. Indeed, for long, local belief held that the fine surviving Romanesque west door was constructed of stones from the Royal Palace of Ulster seized in battle by the victorious O’Briens.
Various memorials to the O’Briens are found throughout the Cathedral along with other treasures including a Pre-Reformation Altar stone, the richly and imaginatively carved misericordiae (under seat carvings) of the choir stalls, a ‘leper’s squint’ window and many other memorial stones and later colourful stained-glass.
