1. Jay Meuser Marker
San Pedro artist Jay Meuser was versatile and prolific. He was an illustrator, portrait painter and cartoonist for several newspapers. His later works were considered abstract and purely non-objective art. Before he exclusively devoted his time to painting in San Pedro, he was a vaudevillian, sailor, boxer, Chief of Police (Corte Madera, CA) and a union welder at the Terminal Island Naval Shipyard.
As President of the San Pedro Art Association (1953), he oversaw three San Pedro galleries and designed, renovated and constructed improvements at the association's gallery at 820 S. Beacon Street in San Pedro. This was the first permanent gallery for the art association. Notably during his term is that the Association held 30 exhibitions with 557 works being shown.
Meuser has "shown unusual artistic leadership and high caliber executive ability in his administration as President of said association".
