1. Church of the Holy Comforter, 1878 Marker

Inscription. In 1876, Rt. Rev. John Freeman Young, Episcopal Bishop of Florida, assigned Rev. Charles S. Williams, Brooklyn, NY as missionary. The number of visitors and residents had increased sufficiently by 1877, that a building was needed. The first services were held in the church on Feb. 10, 1878. In March, Bishop Young consecrated the building as Church of the Holy Comforter.

The design was influenced by Richard Upjohn, an English-American architect, who designed the Trinity Episcopal Church in New York. The style is known as Carpenter Gothic, which was easily adapted and constructed by local carpenters and featured narrow lancet windows, a high-pitched roof with exposed rafters, and a board and batten exterior. There are several churches of this style across Florida.
