South of Broad in Charleston in Charleston County, South Carolina — The American South (South Atlantic)
The Drayton House
Rising from the Civil War ashes of the original c. 1830 Benjamin Smith House, the Drayton House was built on the surviving foundation in 1885 as a city residence for Charles and Eliza Drayton of Drayton Hall. The grand home was designed in the Eastlake architectural style that was popular during the Victorian era, and it remained in the drayton family for 84 years. Adding to the property's charm, the original antebellum tack house, stables, and carriage house survive in excellent condition.
