1. The HUB Marker

Inscription. In Memory of Walter Wilbert Manigault Walter Wilbert Manigault (1910-1968) a native of South Carolina, was a prominent mortician, civic activist, humanitarian and businessman in Georgetown County for several decades. Mr. Manigault and William S. Thompson, D.D.S. purchased the original HUB building at this 123 King Street location. It was originally a two-level, wood structure that especially met the needs of the underserved citizens of Georgetown County. Mr. Manigault became the sole proprietor of the HUB in later years, and he redesigned and rebuilt the HUB structure (c. 1952) as a one-level masonry commercial building. The many contributions of Mr. Manigault to the city and county of Georgetown were recognized by local officials, and in 1964 he was invited by Mayor Lester L. Weed (1907-1977) to serve on the first City of Georgetown Planning Commission.

The HUB has remained a significant part of Georgetown's history over the decades, not only for its important commercial businesses, but also for its expanded contributions of athletic, civic and educational activities to the community. In the earliest years, the HUB

structure was host site for Georgetown's historic Howard High School basketball games and annual proms, and in later years (1950s), it provided one of the center city's first sit-down restaurants and the largest public billiards room for African Americans. The HUB is among the oldest commercial establishments in the City of Georgetown - Historic District.
