A champion for the liberal arts in the core curriculum, Fred Harris also was an innovative educator who established an early program in middle eastern studies. He initiated a visiting professor program and was responsible for the installation of the first data processing facility at B-W. He had a profound and positive influence on the lives of colleagues and students, particularly the recipients of the Fred E. Harris Award. The prize is given to an individual "showing promise as a person and as a student," two characteristics he cherished.
