An engineer who mechanized the production of sandstones, helping to make Berea the "Grindstone Capital of the World," Fletcher Hulet was a guiding force in the development of Baldwin Institute and Baldwin University. A national leader in adult learning through the Lyceum Movement, he shared John Baldwin's passion for education without regard to race or gender. He quarried the stone from his own land, donated the labor and half of the construction cost for Hulet Hall. For nearly a century, Hulet Hall served as the University Chapel, a gathering space for graduations, lectures and the university's first library before being renovated as a women's residence hall.
