Inscription. This was the site of the Gishel Hotel and Bakery until the fire of 1866. Later, John Fritz built both a home and butcher shop that were destroyed in the Gallison Hotel fire of 1887. In 1892, Emily and W. S. Zeller bought the property and built their home. They had a lawn and picket fence which was unusual for the time. In 1897, they turned it into the Mariposa Cash Store. Since 1907, many different businesses have been housed here. One of these was Sam McGouran's telephone exchange (1913). It has also been a pool hall and a barber shop. In 1937, Charles Buchholz opened the California Market.
