George Kissel, a "baseball lifer", was employed by the St. Louis Cardinals organization from 1940 until his death in 2008. Kissel managed over 2,000 MILB games from 1946-1968; including two stints in Winston-Salem. Kissel was called up by St. Louis in 1950 but chose to stay in Winston-Salem; coaching the team to a Carolina League championship.
