1. Alex and Mary Johnson Home Marker

Inscription. The Alex and Mary Johnson House, built in 1900, was designed by a local builder, Charles Zephaniah Shaffer, who was influenced by pattern books and combined a remarkable unity of composition with elaborate decoration. Completed for $4,500, it was one of the most elegant and modern (with its indoor plumbing) homes in the community.

Alex and Mary Alice, born in 1870 and 1878 respectively, were both natives of Grantsville. They began work on the home shortly after their marriage in 1899. The Johnsons lived here with their ten children, Alex's mother, and his three- nephews and a niece, who had been orphaned. The three-car garage was reportedly built c.1910 for the four Model-T Fords the Johnson acquired to transport their large family. From his office in the tower of this house Alex could view his mercantile business known as Johnson Hall across the street. During the Depression, with most of their children grown, the couple took in boarders. Throughout the 1930s and '40s the house was called the Lone Pine Tourist Home after the large pine tree in the front yard. The Johnsons continued to live here until their
