1. Home of Pioneer Joseph Kirkham Marker

Inscription. Dec. 28. 1856 George Wm. and Mary Ann Astington Kirkham welcomed into their family twins, Joseph and Hyrum. They had two other sons, James (1849) and George (1852). The parents had converted to the L.D.S. faith in 1854 while residing in London, England. In 1859 the Kirkham family left their native land for Utah. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley the same year. In the spring of 1860 they moved to Lehi, Utah.

Growing up in Lehi the Kirkham brothers became skilled musicians. the "Kirkham Brothers' Quadrille Band" performed throughout Utah. Joseph was skilled at making violins and guitars. Joseph also organized the "Y. M. M. I. A. Silver Band" in 1887. Other than its religious purpose the Silver Band had a political agenda, which was to support the free silver (bi-metalism) movement. The Silver Band toured Uah to encourage politicians to support free silver.

Joseph, a stonemason, and brother George, a carpenter, were called to work on the St. George Temple. While there, Joseph married Tyresha Cragun March 5, 1875. The couple would have eleven children. Tyresha died in 1894. Two years later Joseph was called to

serve a mission in England. Joseph married Mary Jane Stoddard in 1905. Mary Jane died in 1941. Joseph died june 9, 1943 in Lehi. He remained faithful to his church, family and community throughout his life.
