Partial Columbian Mammoth Remains Unearthed at This Site
Inscription.
In 1937, Daniel Thomas was digging a trench in this yard, at this location to connect into Orem City's new municipal water system. He uncovered what appeared to be a large ancient tooth. Further excavation by a team of archaeologists sent by the University of Utah resulted in the discovery of portions of a Columbian Mammoth. The skull and several other bones were eventually located. They are currently housed at the University of Utah's Museum of Natural History in Salt Lake City. Columbian Mammoths, ancient ancestors of modern elephants lived in this area between 11,000 and 50,000 years ago.
The Thomas home was demolished in 1993 when the Dixon Paper Company Store was built on this location.
