G.F. "Moonie" Brown & Brown's Parkway
On this site from the 1930s to the 1960s, Guerard Fuller (G.F.) Brown owned and operated Brown's Parkway, one of downtown Charleston's first parking facilities. Browns Parkway which included the yards of 4 and 6 St. Philip Street, and 12 Beaufain Street was paved with asphalt and included an ESSO station.
Brown parked cars himself under the lot's pecan trees, charging just 10 cents for the first three hours. Situated behind the Woolworth building, SCN bank and H.L. Green (Silver's five-and-dime), many a student from Memminger High School for Girls as well as other King Street patrons walked through Brown's Parkway on their way to the business district. It was bought by the city in 1957.
Brown's father, Dr. William Stevens Brown Jr. (1869-1930), lived at 6 St. Philip Street and had a dentist office on King Street above the SCN bank. His grandfather, Dr. William Stevens Brown Sr., was also a dentist and lived at 81 Wentworth Street.
