Gunnison Stone Quarries. . , The beautiful quarried stone used in this Water Company building, constructed during Gunnison's boom days in 1882. Located at the west end of Virginia Avenue, the company supplied water from the nearby Gunnison River and manufactured gas for street lights. Until the building was torn down in 2017, the City of Gunnison used the building for many years as a shop. The photo shows the fire department demonstrating its firefighting capabilities in front of the finely detailed stone building., The Gas and Water Company was one of many stone structures built in the early days of Gunnison. The Arts Center building, one block south of here, is another fine example; originally built for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway Express, the sandstone came from the same quarry west of town., Gunnison County was well known for its quarries two of the most notable are the Aberdeen Quarry, seven miles southwest of town, and the Yule Quarry, near the town of Marble. Aberdeen supplied the granite used in the Colorado State Capitol.
