Laurens Janszoon Coster
Door: Alexander Franciscus Schobbens (1768)
Laurens Jansz.

Laurens Jansz. Coster, the 15th century historical figure from Haarlem, was, as for a long time considered to be the inventor of printing. He was supposed to have done this decades before Johannes Gutenberg printed his first bible in Mainz in 1455. This myth was spread through the book Batavia by Hadrianus Junius. Over time, research would show that the historical figure of Coster probably did not even exist, and that the story most likely had been fabricated by an innkeeper to promote his tavern.
Johannes Enschedι commissioned this statue in honor of the 25th anniversary of de type foundry along with the statue of Hadrianus Junius that is placed in front of the stairs inside the archive. Both statues were placed in the courtyard of the company.
