Munster in Lake County, Indiana — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
A Blooming Town
Munster is continuing to grow with many new businesses emerging and projects underway.
37 fiberglass tulip structures, which were organized and made possible by the Munster Civic Foundation, are located around town. Indiana University Northwest student, Tyler Kaufman, designed the tulip structures. The tulips represented the first bloom of spring since the pandemic. The choice of the tulip is also a nod to Munster's history as it recognizes the Dutch farmer that first settled the area.
In 2021, the Town of Munster, in cooperation with Munster Historical Society, received the America In Bloom, "Celebrating Heritage" Outstanding Achievement Award. (photo courtesy of Munster Historical Society)
Munster Ridge Road Station
In 2015, the Northwest Indiana Commuter Transportation District proposed the 9 mile extension of the existing South Shore Line between Dyer and Hammond, Indiana. The extension, called the West Lake Corridor Project, will reach areas in Lake County, Indiana, Munster, and West Lakes. The project will allow residents to have easier access to and from Chicago, Illinois.
Centennial Village
The town's well-known park, Centennial, is a hotspot for a multitude of amenities and activities ranging from fishing, fitness trails, golfing, a dog park, festivals, concerts, weddings, and much more. The new Centennial Village, directly beside the park, adds even more to the area with dining, shopping, condo units, and the Marriott Hotel. Centennial Village pushes toward a more mixed-use and walkable community.
Maple Leaf Crossing
Located near the intersection of Calumet Avenue and 45th Street, the new Maple Leaf Crossing is expected to include space for office buildings, retail shops, restaurants, a music school, and more. The project will feature modern container architecture incorporating train care within the design. The area will also provide an extension of the Monon Trail path through the middle of the development.
A native of Munster and former student of the Munster schools, Sue Hendrickson, pictured to the right, went on to make a remarkable discovery. While working in South Dakota, Sue found fossilized bones projecting out of a cliff wall on August 12, 1990. Those bones turned out to be a nearly complete 67-million-year-old T-rex. The "Sue" fossil display can now be found at the Chicago Field Museum. (photo courtesy of Sue Hendrickson)
The flower sculpture, pictured above, was created by the Munster Garden Club. It can be found at Centennial Park.
The Munster Junior Historical Society (MJHS), led by Dr. Louise Chickie-Wolfe, played a crucial role in Dorothy Lakshmanamurthy's decision to create these signs. The group meets monthy to indulge in Munster history and find ways to give back to the community.
