Ringwood's WWI Casualties
The Rooney family had four orchards on Mullum Mullum Road, Ringwood. There were five boys and one girl in the family, aged thirteen to twenty-two.
Twenty-year-old Norman enlisted in August 1914. Six days after landing at ANZAC Cove he was killed in action - Ringwood's first casualty. His gravestone lies on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
In May 1917, Eric Rooney enlisted. He sustained wounds to his face and neck and died at the 3rd Australian General Hospital. He was buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery in France on 21st May, 1918.
Edgar Rooney enlisted after Norman was killed. He served in the Light Horse and the Machine Gun Squadron. He suffered numerous illnesses but returned safely to Australia.
