Regarding Joseph Stoneman House. National Register of Historic Places № 75001358.
From the National Register Nomination prepared by Daniel H, Giffen, 6/1/1973:
The building is Italianate in style, L-shaped, with a projecting three-bay front portion, the central structure projecting well beyond the side wings. The house is of locally made brick and river stone. There is a wooden cornice in the bracketed style and small porches carrying a similar mode of ornament. The building is two stories tall and has a low hipped roof. The front doors are double, with a glass fan over the entire width. The exterior has seen little change, except for the addition of a wooden porch and triple window in the rear. The house retains its walnut banister on the front stairs and its softwood floors throughout. An attendant brick stable retains its arched carriage entrance but has been remodeled to make an apartment and garage.

The Stoneman-Nokes House represents the flowering of Victorian prosperity in Chagrin Falls. It is the most fully developed Victorian house in the village. Built in 1873,

the property was the residence of Joseph Stoneman, a prominent local merchant and businessman. The house is built of bricks burnt in Stoneman's brickyard in the Village. The property adjoined in the rear that of a hardware store of which Stoneman was a part-owner.

Stoneman was active in both hardware and brickmaking. He financed the brickyard operated by his nephew, Boss Hutchings, who had come to the area from England in 1845. This brickyard was but one of several small businesses and industries which had grown up around the Falls area by 1873. The town was founded in 1833 by Noah Graves, of Sunderland, Massachusetts, who recognized the possibilities of the water power of the Chagrin River, and bought 210 acres along it from Captain Edward Paine of Chardon in that year. By the end of the summer of 1833, a dam had been built across the river above the falls, and a sawmill was built. This first mill was followed by a flour mill, paper mill, foundry and Hutchings' brickyard.
