Inscription. Blarney Castle, which dates from around 1446, is known as a tower house, a type of fortification built by Gaelic lords between the 14th and 16th centuries.

Castle History

Ours was a stronghold of the MacCarthy clan. The typical tower house was four or five storeys tall with one or two main chambers and some smaller rooms on each floor. Usually it would have at least one stone vaulted ceiling. This served not only to keep the thin tower structurally sound by tying the walls together; it also acted as a firebreak — without a roof it’s basically a large chimney.

This being Blarney, ours is an unusually large construction, comprising of at least two towers, the second tower added around 100 years after the first. A vertical line in the masonry on the north elevation indicates where the two towers meet. The tower’s stability is assured by 18 feet thick walls that gradually slope inwards as they rise.

Its layout and appearance continued to change through the centuries reflecting the cultural identity and social standing of its occupants. But whoever they were, they all shared a special gift…

When first built, Blarney Castle would have been covered in plaster and whitewashed to protect it from the elements. On sunny days it must have looked quite startling.
