The marble park where you now stand was constructed in 2006 to commemorate this town's rich marble manufacturing history. The shooting ring is regulation size, and is used frequently throughout the year by young and old alike.

A good perspective may be obtained from this photograph (top right), date unknown, of Main Street, Cairo, as it was 75 to 80 years ago. The photographer's vantage was quite near where you now stand. Note the buildings that still remain today are for the most part, unchanged. The Omega Hotel, long since gone, is visible at the lower right of the top photo. Immediately in front of you and just beyond the bridge was the location of the Cairo Furniture & Undertaking, which was destroyed in the 1950 flood.

The interior of the Cairo Greer Supply (above right), which later became Marshall Hardware, can be seen quite clearly in this undated photograph. It remains today for the most part as it was then. Note the moving ladders that can still be found adorning its interior.

Covered Bridge

The bridge that you are standing next to was once covered, as is seen in this photo from the 1930's (at left). Many bridges were constructed this way to help protect the structure from the elements. This bridge is one of several covered bridges that were in or near Cairo.

The lumber that was removed during the bridge's reconstruction was used in building the clubhouse for the golf course on schoolhouse hill.
