Heilige Willibrordus
⎯⎯⎯
St. Willibrord
Inscription.
Saint Willibrord came from England around the year 700 with eleven other monks to preach the faith in the Netherlands. On his journey, he also visited Heiloo, where a well appeared due to a miracle. This Saint Willibrord Well is located near the medieval White Church further down in Heiloo. From the 17th century onwards, pilgrimages to this Saint Willibrord Well began. This veneration became increasingly linked to that of Our Lady of Ter Nood. Pilgrimage medals and prints from that period are known in which both Mary and Willibrord are depicted.
This statue of Willibrord was created in 1935 by the Hague sculptor Pieter Biesiot (1890-1980). The white-painted natural stone statue depicts Saint Willibrord with his attributes. In his left hand, as an archbishop, he holds his bishop's staff, and in his right hand, a model of a church. The church in his hands refers to his missionary life's goal of proclaiming the faith and building monasteries and churches.
Saint Willibrord was a driven missionary and conveyed the faith to non-believers by telling them about Jesus. What story do you like to tell others?
